Summary: | The study attempts to provide an insight into the profiles of
Singapore home-grown manufacturers who have invested in China and
the problems encountered during their investment process. The
ultimate objective is to provide a guide - for companies who
contemplate to venture into China. The main motivation behind
the study is the recent immerse interests of Singapore investors
in venturing into China.
The study relates the recent regionalisation drive by the
government as an important turning point in the investment fever
in China. Efforts were made to review China's open door policy
in 1978 as part of the background study leading to a better
appreciation of the China's foreign investment policy today.
Questionnaires sent to manufacturers with investment in China
form the main data input of the study. Further understanding of
specific issues were supplemented by interviews with directors,
managers, business analysts of these companies.
Several interesting findings were observed, and from there
important conclusions were drawn. Essentially, Singapore's
investments in China were small and problems encountered were
mainly in the areas of uncertain business environment and lack
of legal safeguards. Valuable recommendations were suggested,
which the project team hope will be useful to future investors. |
