Summary: | Singlish is a term derived from the words "Singapore" and "English". It is known
as a form of colloquial English and it is quite different from Standard English/
This study is not concerned with the technical aspects of Singlish but rather the
attitude towards this local language. The analysis involves a section which
attempts to detect distinguishing characteristics of both Singlish and non-Singlish
users. Later part of this report aims to examine the current usage of Singlish and
to investigate the level of acceptability of Singlish among Singaporeans in both
society and mass media.
Usage of Singlish is examined through identifying the sources and frequency of
use of Singlish, and attempting to isolate the reasons for the use of Singlish.
Acceptability of Singlish in society is determined by breaking up the analysis into
the various components of the society, namely the workplace, home, the
educational environment and the social environment.
Due to the public's concern over the use of Singlish in mass media, special
attention is given to the acceptability of Singlish in the media, over the TV, the
radio, in the newspapers, publications and dramas. The perceived advantages and
disadvantages of use of Singlish over the media is also looked into. |
