Summary: | This project seeks to have an understanding of a pressing Naval Architectural issue. The issue entails ship’s resistance as much of the ship’s power is expended to negate the resistances. Thus effective prediction models are looked into in this project. In the first part of the project, the crucial resistances to a ship’s motion are examined to develop an understanding of a ship in motion during voyages. Subsequently different prediction models are examined to determine how Naval Architects develop a hull design and an efficient operating velocity. After the examination of the prediction methods, the statistical model of Holtrop-Mennen’s method is utilized for the prediction of a ship’s resistance. An algorithm is computed on Microsoft Excel in order to effectively explore the method. Two different ship types are used to seek the validity of the method and these ships’ dimensions and related coefficients are inputted into the algorithm to derive their resistances. In the conclusion, Holtrop-Mennen’s methodology has proven to be comprehensive and accounts for the necessary ship types that are used for the regression model. Further development from this project can be made for the Holtrop-Mennen’s method to correlate with the ship’s propulsive efficiency to determine an optimum operating velocity. |
