Description
Summary:The news contains an imperative repository of historical records in the nation. Like a frame frozen in time, the newspaper captures contemporary events and concerns of the society. As the news aggregate over time, it can provide some interesting insights of the past events. The objective of this project is to enrich the collection of national resources through Information Visualisation. Corpora of headlines and abstracts from The Straits Times publications are collected from 1845 to 2009. Data management techniques acquired from Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Data Mining and Information Retrieval are enforced to manage huge data. The project then explores for suitable visualisation with numerous trial and error to best match the processed data. The program is still at its premature stage where a more lexical level of syntactic parsing and semantic clustering needed to be carried out to produce an all-rounded visualisation. Otherwise, the project serves as a solid foundation for potential development to build on the master plan towards a Smart Nation.
