Summary:This paper outlines new approaches and experimental mini projects to form novel approaches to teaching microprocessor-based systems designed for undergraduate students. An ARM softcore is run on a commercial FPGA board that is interfaced to a custom-built auxiliary board. Students are guided through the process of software development for the ARM-based core through four laboratory sessions. Some of the projects use the board alone to develop projects while others require an additional module to extend the functionality of the board. Through these sessions, they become familiarized with the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and the relevant tools needed for such embedded systems development work.
