Let emotions flow where they will” : a study on emotions in interpersonal relationships in the Zhuang Zi

Given the complexity on interpreting his sophisticated views on emotions, this baffles the scholars leaving them with different opinions contradicting each other. It eventually transforms into a bigger question: How should we define and interpret Zhuangzi’s emotions? The sole reason of why it is inappropriate to sector Zhuangzi’s emotions into merely youqing and wuqing is that emotions are complicated in the empirical world. Zhuangzi's parables are mostly projections of the empirical world and if we observe carefully, we can see that Zhuangzi did show different expressions, contradicting at times, with respect to his relationship to the person. To better explain Zhuangzi’s paradoxical emotion states,we can first study on the parables as they reflect how Zhuangzi would react according to his interpersonal relationships. These parables may be less studied by philosophers compared to those regarding to Dao and Ziran (nature), yet they are still perusable as Zhuangzi's parables are the best materials for us to perceive and understand Zhuangzi’s sophisticated emotions. Next, we should compare Zhuangzi’s and Confucianism’s opinion on relationships. Zhuangzi brought up a new idea in dealing with relationship, which he called it Zhenqing (true feelings). Zhenqing is a state which one lets his emotions flow naturally, instead of persisting to either Youqing or Wuqing. It opposes the traditional Confucianism's way of dealing with emotions, where one should always express his emotions as a respect or etiquette. This paper hopes to provide a new perspective in understanding Zhuangzi’s emotions in a thorough viewpoint, thus bringing new ways of dealing with emotions and interpersonal relationships in the current world.
