| Summary: | Based on the correlation between the gender structure in Singapore and its impacts on levels of acculturative stress among student migrant, this paper aims to provide a sociological perspective to how this shapes integration experience of student migrants. Study is carried out using qualitative research through individual, face-to-face interviews with 18 student migrants (9 men and 9 women) that are currently studying in universities in Singapore. Existing theories suggests that student migrants would engage in different coping strategies to manage cultural differences. Findings from this paper suggest that in face of gender related acculturative stress; female student migrants are more successfully integrated into host countries while male student migrants tended to avoid situations that threaten their masculinity. |
