Description
Summary:Singapore’s nightlife scene has apparently undergone a dramatic transformation since the early 90s, with a handful of nightclub spots to a dozen of them island wide today. With the proliferation of nightclub entities in Singapore, this paper attempts to discover the ‘sacredness’ of nightclubs. It seeks to uncover the significance of the nightclub space in the everyday lives of the frequent clubbers and how the site translates into a place of joy, transcendence, and community to them. The qualitative nature of 12 in-depth interviews and participant observations shed some light on how nightclub can be a meaningful safe space, enabling alternate identity construction and negotiation for sustaining a temporary social tie that is often seen as an illicit or subterranean form of act, usually hidden from daylight eyes.
