In recent years, Singapore invested $1.33 billion dollars as part of a public-private partnership (PPP) scheme to construct the Singapore Sports Hub. The Sports Hub is made accessible to many by heavy subsidizations and government funds. Furthermore, the recent triumph of Joseph Schooling at the Rio Olympics has led to a surge in popularity and interest in sports and has taken Singapore sport to a higher level. His achievements had illustrated the effect of sport as a nation-building tool, cultivated nationalism and motivated more people to excel in sports. However, the level of popularity, interest and participation in sports within Singapore is affected by many factors. One important factor is the significant importance and priority given to traditional education and the pursuit of “professions” over sports. As Singaporeans are generally pragmatic and focuses on academics and career building, sports may become inadequate as a pursuit to secure a promising future. Another important factor influencing the level of popularity, interest and participation in sports is the availability and accessibility of sporting facilities. Critical to this factor is the availability and accessibility of transportation systems (both private and public). The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between accessibility of transportation systems and sports participation of participants. The study uses the opinions recorded by survey to identify correlations between easy accessibility of transportation and sports participation, and then formulate new approaches and strategies to address the findings.
