The number of working citizens with age ranging from 20 to 64 is expected to slowly decrease over the years from 2015 onwards, at the same time, the number of citizens aged 65 and older increases rapidly. The trend implies the aging of the society which is going to be a main social problem in the near future. Therefore, we could foresee that how to take care of the elderly considerately and efficiently will become a main focus of people. The Final Year Project is proposed and carried out by a team of two based on this social concern. In order to ensure the elderly’s safety and provide convenience to people who take care of them, the elderly assistant robot platform, is developed including a prototype robot and a user-end application. The platform consists of three main functional modules: (1) Locomotion System used to control the robot remotely, (2) Home Monitoring System used to monitor the home environment and (3) Data Collection System used to grab the real-time data collected by various sensors on the robot. Besides the interaction between the robot and the application, a server and a database are set up at the back-end to handle the authorization process due to the privacy concern. With the aid of the platform developed in this project, people who are out of home could use the application to monitor the environment in the elderly’s home by viewing the live video stream, control the robot moving remotely, monitor the environmental data collected by sensors after finishing the authorization process which satisfies the need of privacy.
