Summary:With huge population to feed, China's food security has always been an issue of concerns for her government and people worldwide even before China's accession to WTO. On the eve of China's accession to WTO, it is particularly meaningful to study the food security issues in China. The purposes of this paper are to examine the food security situations in China under various scenarios complying with WTO framework and suggest possible policy options for food security in China. A demand and supply model was used to compute the welfare effects of various policy options. Theories in international economics, such as comparative advantage, were also applied to illustrate the future prospects of food security in China. It is recommended that policies such as production promotion, consumption guidance, distribution improvement, and "green box" supporting arrangements be implemented to ensure food security in China
