| Summary: | This research examines how young adults in Singapore respond to mediated encounters of distant suffering. Despite the media constantly presenting to us news and images of suffering from all over the world, there has been little research done on the audiences of distant suffering and what their responses are. This study seeks to fill in this gap by drawing on focus group discussions to explore how the media plays a role in influencing the way young adults respond and uncover other possible factors of influence. In understanding how young adults respond to mediated encounters of distant suffering, this research would serve to provide insights on the role of the media and also to support young adults in building compassion towards distant sufferers. |
