Summary: | This paper examines the recent history of films centred on National Service (NS) in Singapore and explore manners in which state-sanctioned beliefs and values have embedded themselves within these cultural documents. I argue that in films centred on NS, the Singapore nation has continued to be imagined in the mould of Asian values and communitarianism prevalent since the 1980s. By giving primacy to the analysis of the films which I have identified, I hope to illuminate the processes at play in the dissemination of paradigms and offer some insight on the narratives imbued in films which Singaporeans are exposed to regularly. |
