Conversation analysis : ‘confirming allusions by repeating’ as a communicative function during turn-taking
Tu...

Turn-taking research is a core issue in conversation analysis. In our daily conversations, there are various ways in designing our turns as communicative functions during turn-taking in order to get required information from each other.
This study will explore how in a two-person conversation, the recipient is able to get the information he/she wants by repeating prior utterance of the speaker in his/her turn as a communicative function. For example, the recipient can seek accuracy and affirmation of the information provided by the speaker, or, the recipient can prompt the speaker to repair the information he/she has provided by repeating prior utterance of the speaker which contains the respective information.
Results of this study show that the phenomenon of recipient repeating speaker’s prior utterance appears frequently in doctor-patient/patient’s family member conversations, indicating that the communicative function of recipient repeating speaker’s prior utterance during turn-taking is helpful for obtaining information from the speaker (confirming allusions by repeating). This is especially so between doctor-patient/patient’s family member conversations in a clinical setting, when there is a need for doctors to understand patients’ condition as well as patients to readily accept treatment suggested by doctors after diagnosis. |
