Summary: | Climate change have been a palpable issue that will cause severe consequences for the world in the future without adequate preventive measures. Every individual plays a part saving the earth before the world face the consequences. According to United States Environment Protection Agency, the primary sources of greenhouse gases emission for US are from transportations, electrical production, industry, commercial and residential, agriculture, land use and forestry. [1] Greenhouse gases emissions for transportation mainly come from burning of fossils fuel for cars, ships, trains, trucks and planes. There are over 90 percent of the petroleum-based fuel including gasoline and diesel used for transportation. Petroleum contains toxicity that contribute to air pollution, climate change and various illness in human hence there is a need to replace petroleum as the source of energy. An alternative source of energy without greenhouse gases emission would be batteries. The step towards a greener future would be to use renewable energy source instead of combustion of fossil fuels. Battery technologies have been implemented around the world by using hybrid and electric vehicles. However, there are more changes in transportation using hybrid and electric vehicle on land system than on sea. Through case studies, a comprehensive review is completed to assess the applicability of a 1MW battery by examining the propulsion and hotel/service loads of a patrol ship. Analysing of different type of ships, including existing battery powered ships will be performed for reference purposes. Thereafter, design of charging, power distribution, control and monitoring system of a patrol ship will be completed to ensure the availability and optimization of efficiency. |
