In the local context, due to rapid urbanisation and a lack of a hinterland, Singapore imports more than 90% of its food (Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore 2017), rendering our food supply to be largely dependent upon on global food trends, diplomatic ties, and market shifts. This makes our food security very volatile especially in times of crisis. despite the increase in our recycling rate, this boosted rate turns out to be largely nominal in nature as the initial stage of food wastage which is the waste generated has not been rectified. This calls the effectiveness of the state interventions on the local food waste issue in the forms of campaigns and implementations, into question.
