Academic libraries today spend a large proportion of their materials budget on electronic resources. In the 2007-08 statistics reported by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) in U.S.A., the average spending on electronic resources was 51% of total library expenditure. For many years now, users are able to access this huge amount of scholarly works in electronic format subscribed by their libraries through the Internet via desktops and laptops. This has led to huge changes in the way libraries organize their services. It is likely that libraries will need to prepare for further significant changes in their service model as the use of smart phones and mobile devices worldwide climbed rapidly to greater heights. These devices are fast becoming an extension of our body, and their use as highly portable learning devices cannot be ignored. This presentation discusses some of these developments and explores issues in providing digital library services for mobile learning in academic libraries.
