Summary:For years, a red-shaded map of China’s intellectual property regime would show the strongest IP protection in the major cities – indicated by deep, 100 percent red, and the weakest — barely 10 percent red — in the outlying provinces and some coastal regions. Nevertheless, firms operating in such an uneven, almost idiosyncratic legal environment, can pursue a patenting strategy that will provide a strong measure of protection. This author describes four such strategies.
