Summary: | We propose a multistage framework for understanding the nature and managing the process of automation. The proposed framework highlights six fundamental stages that all operations may undergo in their progress towards automation and beyond. We explain how the proposed framework can be operationalized as an Automation Readiness Audit Instrument and hence be used to help move the operation through the various stages of automation. In addition, the paper also suggests how the proposed framework can be helpful to decision–makers at the national level in their attempt to help move the country's industries toward automation. Finally, we also show how the proposed framework is consistent with the Japanese Just–in–Time approach and their experiences in the move towards automation and beyond. |
