Summary: | In 2017, BMW Group Indonesia (BGI) announced the highest achievement by a massive

increase of BMW sales. In the first quarter of 2018, there was also an increase in BMW sales

compared to the same period in 2017. Of these two achievements, the BMW X1 is the main

product that has the biggest sales increase so that BGI predicts an increase in demand for BMW

X1 in the future.

This successful attainment was achieved by BGI by cooperating with PT Gaya Motor, a

company who engaged in the assembly of four-wheeled vehicles, such as BMW, with the

production process based completely knocked down. To anticipate the increasing demand, the

company evaluates one common takt time method which is no longer relevant and results in a

low productivity assembly line, especially in the overhead line.

Low productivity was solved through the newly proposed assembly line design using the lean

manufacturing approach, such as waste elimination, line balancing using ranked positional

weight and largest candidate rule method, process activity mapping, workgroup process

mapping, layout evaluation using spaghetti diagrams, and 5S.

It is known that excess motion is the highest type of waste with a proportion of 43.50%. The

solution provided was proven to increase productivity by decreasing idle time by 1545.74

seconds and smoothness index by 850.73, increasing line efficiency by 15.30% and production

capacity from 12 to 16 units per day, as well as a more optimal layout proposal. |
