PREPARATION OF CHITOSAN â CELLULOSE ACETATE MEMBRANES FOR THE SEPARATION OF STARCH AND MALTOSE
Starch and maltose is a form of glucose polymer and dimers, respectively. Starch could be further hydrolyzed enzymatically to yield maltose and glucose. Such process needs to be conducted properly with a good efficiency. In order to separate these compounds, it is required a membrane material that c...

Starch could be further hydrolyzed enzymatically to yield maltose and glucose. Such process needs to be conducted properly with a good efficiency. In order to separate these compounds, it is required a membrane material that can be used as a membrane bioreactor. Significant difference in size could serve as a basis of separation a mixture of starch and maltose. Starch molecules are much bigger than maltose molecules so that membrane selectivity due to relatively small pores will provide a high rejection towards starch molecules. In this research, membranes were prepared using phase inversion technique towards a mixture (polyblend) of chitosan and cellulose acetate having a ratio of 1:10, 1:12, and 1:14. The membrane rejection towards starch was in a range of 63-93 % and the membrane rejection towards maltose was in a rangie of 0-8 % at a 2 bar operational pressure. Such membranes were then characterized using infrared spectrophotometer for the analysis of functional groups, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for the observation of membrane morphology and contact angle measurement to have the idea about the nature of the membrane surface. The average thickness of the fabricated membrane was 0,26 mm. Meanwhile contact angle measured were 24o for membranes having a ratio of 1:10, 0o for those having ratio of 1:12 and 32o for those having a ratio of 1:14. Analysis of infrared spectrum demonstrated the formation of new bonds between chitosan and cellulose acetate. text |
