Description
Summary:Coal Upgrading Technology (CUT) is a method among various low rank coal upgrading methods. The CUT process utilizes multistage fluidized bed superheated steam drying followed by tar coating. The next step of CUT development program is the construction of CUT Commercial Plant (CCP) with raw coal processing capacity of 150 ton/hour. CCP comprises of 5 plant subsystems, i.e. preparation, drying, briquetting & storage, power generation, and water treatment subsystem. The CUT drying process is carried out in the drying subsystem. This subsystem is divided into 3 parallel processing lines with 50 ton/hour coal processing capacity in each processing line as the consequence for the high plant coal processing capacity. Each of this processing line is then called drying unit. In this final project, CCP drying unit preliminary design was performed using design simulation in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets in order to obtain the most optimum condition for coal drying and heating processes in each fluidized bed stage. Before entering the drying process, the coal temperature is 30°C with 30% moisture content (based on dry mass). After being processed in the drying unit, the coal moisture content is reduced to 5% (based on dry mass) with temperature of 210°C. These drying and heating processes are carried out in 2 bubbling fluidized bed stages. The first stage pressure is held at 1.7 bar while the second stage is at 3.8 bar. The energy for the drying process is attained from superheated steam supplied by the power generation subsystem. The relationship between the three drying units (drying subsystem) and the power generation subsystem had lead to the requirement of process simulation using Cycle Tempo program. The simulation results are the main equipment operating condition in drying subsystem and power generation subsystem and also some CCP preliminary design parameters, i.e. the drying process steam consumption and the CCP coal consumption. The drying process steam consumption is 0.982 kg/ evaporated coal moisture, while the CCP coal consumption for the overall plant operation is 12.44 ton/hour. This requirement can be expressed as the energy requirements of the CCP coal upgrading process of 8.13 MJ/kg evaporated coal moisture.
