Description
Summary:Design facilitation becomes the usual practice as the manifestation of design thinking practice among companies that want to find innovative ideas. The practices lead to the broadening of designer’s role in conducting design process, that is as a facilitator who conducts non-designer professionals in discovering innovative ideas. To do that, a facilitator needs to stimulate the non- designers to think creatively by exploring many ideas (divergent thinking) and discussing the right ideas (convergent thinking). With the pandemic that are getting subside, international institution and human capital professional predict that teleworking and hybrid working style would continue because the employees have realized the advantages of teleworking. Thus, it is very likely that design facilitation could be conducted virtually. In responding that, the author did a study case of virtual design facilitation conducted by a design consultant which focuses on providing co-design services. The author analyzed how the facilitator conduct the design collaboration through virtual design facilitation and utilize verbal communication to support his role in stimulating participants’ creativity. The author collected the data by observing the activity, analizing the electronic documents, and conducting interview with the facilitator. The author finds that digital application becomes crucial to support virtual design facilitation, especially in coordinating all acitivities. The virtual facilitation using the application is also potential in minimizing the effect of power dynamics. The facilitator utilized some question categories to stimulate participants’ creativity. Based on the findings and literature reviews, the author recommends six how-to’s to help facilitator in optimizing his/her role to stimulate creativity in a virtual design facilitation.
