Summary: | The role of human capital on industry world attracts bigger attention.
Influenced by the trend of positive psychology, study on work engagement
has excalated in quantity. Employees with high engagement to his/her work,
have positive role to achieve organization outcomes, such as high
performance and commitment and also low absent and turnover. Resources
are factors that contribute on creating and developing work engagement.
Personal resource (core self-evaluations) is assumed to mediate relationship
between job resources (job characteristics) and work engagement (WE). Job
characteristics (JC) consist of five core job dimensions (skill variety, task
identity, task significance, autonomy, and feedback). Core self-evaluations
(CSE) consist of four core traits (self-esteem, generalized self-efficacy, locus
of control, and emotional stability), which is responsible to form individuals
self-appraisal. The research desain was survey and involved 100 employees
of a banking company in Yogyakarta. Three questionnaires were used to
collect data. Sequential regressions test with SPSS 18 program was used to
analyze the data. First, there were significant and positive correlation
between JC and CSE (R = 0.393, p < 0.01). Second, JC was significantly
correlated with WE (R=0.419, p<0.01). Third, CSE had significant
correlation with WE (R=0.499, p<0.01), while JC showed non significant
relation with WE (R=0.106, p>0.01). Based on mediation testing, the result
proved the researchs hypothesis, that core self-evaluations mediate the
relationship between job characteristics and work engagement. |
