An affective intelligent tutoring system for science that promotes engagement

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) have the potential of allowing students to be more engaged in the lesson. The researchers developed a prototype Environment Awareness Learning System (EALS) which teaches students from Jaime Hilario Integrated School La Salle and De La Salle Santiago Zobel about the environment. The prototype is interactive, visually appealing, and adaptive to individual needs with the intent of keeping the students engaged. Affect recognition through behavior was used to analyze emotions, specifically engagement or disengagement. Interventions used were determined by considering the affective state, supported by the cognitive state of the student. The researchers were able to observe that there is a trend between engagement and performance, with those marked as engaged by the system have a higher chance of having a better score.
