Description
Summary:Although the Philippines supplies a significant number of maritime workers in the world, the international maritime industry still suffers from high attrition rates and low retention rates. This is in spite of the large number of interventions that were conducted to improve monetary compensation packages for seafarers. To address this issue, this study leans on the Self- Determination theory perspective to investigate the role of intrinsic motivation in retaining junior Filipino seafarer officers in the maritime industry. It was predicted that intrinsic motivation would have a mediating effect on the relationship between salary and retention. One hindered seven Filipino junior seafarer officers answered questionnaires measuring their salary, intrinsic motivation, and job retention. The results showed that intrinsic motivation has a significant mediating effect on salary and retention. The findings support the Self-Determination theory perspective in explaining the role of intrinsic motivation in retaining junior Filipino seafarer officers.
