To address this issue, this study leans on the Self- Determination theory perspective to investigate the role of intrinsic motivation in retaining junior Filipino seafarer officers in the maritime industry. It was predicted that intrinsic motivation would have a mediating effect on the relationship between salary and retention. One hindered seven Filipino junior seafarer officers answered questionnaires measuring their salary, intrinsic motivation, and job retention. The results showed that intrinsic motivation has a significant mediating effect on salary and retention.
