The effect of audio-visual aids on the mathematics achievement of freshman student at Manila High School

This study determines the effect of using computer as a tool of instruction in learning the basic operations of fractions and the application of these to problem solving on the mathematical achievement of freshman students of Manila High School. The experimental pretest-posttest control group design...

This study determines the effect of using computer as a tool of instruction in learning the basic operations of fractions and the application of these to problem solving on the mathematical achievement of freshman students of Manila High School. The experimental pretest-posttest control group design was used in this study. Participants were selected according to the results of the IQ test and pretest administered to all freshmen. The sixty lowest and poorly-performing students taken from different sections were the participants of the study. An achievement test was developed and validated by the experts and was used as pretest and posttest. After three weeks of experimentation, another test which was made parallel to the achievement test was used for retention test. The inferential statistics was used to analyze the data. The findings of the study are: (1) The use of computer as a tool of instruction is beneficial to the students in learning fraction and its operation and also its applications to problems solving (2) There is significant difference in the performance of the experimental group between the pretest and posttest and (3) The experimental group performed significantly higher than the control group in the posttest as well as in the retention test. Based on the findings derived from this research, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) Since the posttest and retention test of the experimental group were significantly higher than that of the control group, then the use of computer as visual aid of instruction is more effective that the traditional method (2) Since the posttest achievement of 1997-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/1845 Master's Theses English Animo Repository Manila High School -- Students Mathematics -- Study and teaching -- Audio visual aids Mathematical ability -- Testing Achievement tests Computer-assisted instruction Mathematics
