Summary: | This study deals with the development of a proposed training program for teachers in preparation for inclusive settings, based on the identified needs of the regular classroom teachers. The study employed the descriptive method utilizing a researcher devised questionnaire and unstructured interview. The data gathered relative to the respondents profile and training needs were used as basis for the proposed training program for teachers in an inclusive setting.Data obtained from the study revealed the training needs of the regular classroom teacher which include difficulty in relating with children of various types of handicapping condition, conflicts with colleagues perceived inabilities or inadequacies and in handling special children in the inclusive setting. Needs of teachers are also identified. Among the inadequacies are inadequate knowledge of the paces of learning among the disadvantaged children inadequacy in employing the most appropriate teaching strategies to disadvantaged children. Among the inabilities are inability to handle disruptive behaviors of various types of children inability to establish healthy working relationship between typically developing and disadvantaged children inability to construct evaluation items to measure achievements of children with special needs and inability to apply varied evaluation techniques of diagnosing children with special needs. Identified needs are needs to identify teaching strategies that can be employed to both typically developing and disadvantaged children need to interpret test results of children with special needs need to administer assessment tools to children with various disabilities lack of understanding of the principles of teaching normal and disadvantaged children lack of skills in utilizing test results to help children with special needs.
A training program for teachers in a inclusive setting based on the findings of the study is proposed. The proposed program for classroom teachers in preparation for inclusive setting generally aims to equip the same with adequate working knowledge, skills and attitudes required of teachers in an inclusive setting. |
