These activities were based on the academic needs in reading, writing and language of children with mild mental retardation. They were likewise based on their preferred recreational and cultural activities. The descriptive method of research was employed in this study. The study was conducted in special education centers in the Division of City Schools, Manila, namely: P. Gomez Elementary School, P. Burgos Elementary School, and Silahis ng Katarungan Special School. The respondents in this study were 30 children with mild mental retardation and teachers teaching these children in the selected schools. Three researcher-made questionnaires/checklists were the main instruments in data gathering in this study. The study revealed academic needs in reading as follows: to summarize a selection to translate ideas into practical situations to sequence events in a selection to draw the moral lesson of a lesson and to identify them in a selection to read phrases to read sentences to note details to get the main idea to solve life-situational problems analytically to answer questions based on story read to read words and to classify words. The needs in language were: to conceptualize ideas with ease to ask questions appropriately to read own simple stories to reason out intelligently to acquire turn-taking skills during conversation to describe persons adequately and to express feelings appropriately. Their writing needs were: to write short paragraphs to write/compose sentences to observe correct sentence conclusion to write/compose phrases to write words from dictation to write sentences about a picture to write a short note/thank you letter to observe grammatical rules to use references properly to write/compose words to write correct spelling of words to use punctuation marks correctly to alphabetize words and to use lower and upper case letters.
