Summary: | This report describes the development of a speedometer cum odometer for roller blading that is affordable and meant for retrofit installation on a wide range of available roller skates. An experimental prototype has been successfully developed, based on an optical sensing technique and using embedded microprocessor control. The system can display the speed of roller blading and the total distance travelled. It can also alert the skater whenever a preset high speed is exceeded. To cater to the different strides and skating patterns of users, the system can be calibrated accordingly. The settings to allow for different wheel sizes are also provided. The experimental prototype has been successfully tested in a number of calibration runs. An estimate for the per-unit cost of the system in mass production volume has been performed, and was found to be low cost. It is believed that the proposed speedometer cum odometer could be developed into a successful consumer product. |
