Fundraising activities as collective memory : construction of school identity in Anglican High School

AHS is now one of Special Assistance Plan (SAP) schools by Singapore government. This paper discusses how AHS has continuously, since its founding years, organised fund-raising activities, and how through such activities, it has become a prime example of how teaching staff, students, parents and alumni, can be brought together, and thus contributing to the construction of the AHS’s identity. Such identity and sense of belonging need to be repeatedly and continuously shaped and passed down, so as to become a collective memory belonging to all generations of Anglicans. Based on four alumni’s oral interviews and second literature sources, such fund-raising events would be divided by time periods into three categories: 1) construction of the sports stadium through students’ fund-raising from the school’s founding to the 1970s; 2) fund-raising events including bazaars and arts performances in the 1980s to the 1990s; and 3) fund-raising events including AHS school walk and carnivals from the 2000s onwards.
