Summary: | Surface roughness plays a significant role in the engineering industries. It is challenging to produce a part with a perfectly smooth surface. There are always some irregulars are formed on the surface. Therefore, It is crucial to control the surface roughness within the specific acceptable limits to meet the product requirements. The non-contact surface texture inspection system on large objects using C++ programming that integrated the chromatic confocal sensor with a 3-axis linear motorised stage is proposed. Chromatic confocal sensor characteristic can determine surface texture at fast scanning speed with high resolution with high measuring accuracy. It also considers high integration flexibility, material and environmental independence in measuring dark and highly reflective and transparent material and large tilt surfaces. The different contact and non-contact measuring methods and techniques and the importance of surface inspection, and how the surface roughness values affect overall performance and efficiency are also discussed in the report. Several experiments were conducted to validate the new inspection system's measurement capability, feasibility, and accuracy. The result proves that the proposed new inspection system is suitable and can provide high feasibility and efficiency for the surface roughness measurement. |
