Two CEO’s letters from two different companies will be explored and analyzed under Appraisal Theory(Martin & White, 2005), a framework found to be necessary for studying resources of evaluation. The letters will be analyzed individually and subsequently contrasted with each other in order to discuss the differences in the use of evaluative resources. This research also serves to demonstrate how the CEO’s letter to shareholders is an avenue for communication between the CEO and the public and how the CEO presents the company. Appraisal Theory can be used to gain insight on how the CEO can manage the impression of the company to its shareholders. The major conclusion of the research is that the CEO’s letter can be used as a strategic resource for attracting investment and commitment from the shareholders.
