Abstract: The discussion of the bullying phenomenon is one of the most influential and widely discussed topics globally in the 21st century. Netflix adapted an influential novel, Thirteen Reasons Why, into a television drama with the same name and released it in 2017. The drama was a big hit and sparked a heated discussion on the internet, resulting in extreme opinions about the portrayal of bullying and suicide in the film. Among all the academic research regarding Thirteen Reasons Why, none of them explored the literary translation of the novel. The literary translation of bullying themed novels is closely linked with the current state of our community, which gives it value and importance. The novel Thirteen Reasons Why was written using dual narrative, which is an innovative way to portray the author’s view of bullying, and the meaning of the novel. Upon comparing the original novel with the Taiwanese translated work 《汉娜的遗言》 (which translates to Hannah’s last words), the research found the inclination of the translator to project one’s value and motive in the novel, which he showed by manipulating the narrators’ image in the novel. The research on bullying-themed novels adds social value in today’s academic field as it shows how the translation is manipulated to fit the targeted reader and society, or it could be used to change the reader’s belief in the topic. This essay hopes to use the examples found by comparing Thirteen Reasons Why and its Taiwan literary translation, to show the translator’s presence in the novel, as well as to provide a new and relevant topic for academic research on literary translation ——translation study on novels about bullying.
