The Ah Boys to Men series currently consists of four movies: Ah Boys to Men 1 (2012), Ah Boys to Men 2 (2013), Ah Boys to Men 3: Frogmen (2015) and Ah Boys to Men 4 (2017). Ah Boys to Men 1 and Ah Boys to Men 2 achieved the highest box office records in 2012 and 2013 respectively, and Ah Boys to Men 3: Frogmen placed 5th in 2015, in "Local Top 10 Best Movies". The cumulative box office of Ah Boys to Men 4 reached 4.91 million, making it the top-grossing Chinese film in Singapore in 2017. The movie series depicts the life in army, exposing audience to content that they rarely see in other movies or in their daily lives. The movies similarly have a strong display of the local culture and societal characteristics, allowing local audiences of different race and culture to resonate with the content. The plots and characters of the movies consist of unique Singaporean cultures and phenomenon, touching the hearts of the local audience while disseminating the local culture and societal characteristics beyond the country, reaching out to more audiences with different cultures and backgrounds. This report will analyze the presentation of the local culture and society, as well as the success of the films, through the subtitles, storylines and characters in Ah Boys to Men 1 and Ah Boys to Men 2 and how they have shaped the image of the Singapore society for both local and foreign audiences.
