On creative treason in the translation of children's literature from the perspective of deconstruction: a case study of Alice's adventures in wonderland

The author uses multiple nursery rhymes, puns, wordplay, and jokes to create the novel. These unique writing styles not only pique the interest of readers but also present significant challenges to translators. According to deconstruction theory, absolute faithfulness is unrealistic in translation. Both texts and meanings possess ambiguity and uncertainty. The life experience, the period in which translators live, and a translator’s translation attitude will influence their interpretation and translation of the source text. Additionally, differences in language and culture necessitate that translators make certain modifications and adjustments in translation. This also implies that translators cannot avoid committing creative treason in their work. From the perspective of deconstruction, this study analyses three Chinese versions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and examines the creative treason in the translation of characterization, vocabulary, and rhetoric. Through this study, the author discovers that a translator's interpretation of the source text has a significant influence on their translation methods and that in the process of translation, translators also require some creative treason to better reproduce the source text. Finally, this study seeks to give useful advice for future translators as well as provide a new perspective for future translation studies of children's literature.
