Hokkien being the most widely spoken dialect in Singapore, has therefore attracted much attention. Compared to other Min dialects, Hokkien in Singapore consist of a large number of English and Malay loanwords. However, the development of a language is influenced by its linguistic ecology. Therefore, this study hopes to examine the overall use of these loanwords in Singapore in recent years. The study is divided into two main parts: (1) a questionnaire survey to collect linguistic and personal background information of the speakers and (2) an interview to examine the use of loanwords by Singaporean Hokkien speakers aged 21 and above, using 72 loanwords collected from the Singapore Minnan Dictionary (Xinjiapo Minnan Hua Cidian) coupled with multiple summary questions. The study found that (i) Hokkien speakers from an older age group have a better command of Malay loanwords than younger speakers, while the reverse is true for English loanwords. (ii) The use of some loanwords has been or is about to be phased out, and most of them being Malay loanwords. (iii) There are inconsistencies in the pronunciation of Singapore Hokkien (iv) Whether Singapore Hokkien speaker consider these words as loanwords or as code-switching is still debatable. Finally, it is hoped that this study will help to promote the future teaching of Singapore’s Hokkien dialect.
