The play intricately weaves two narratives: one delving into the life of a hand puppet troupe leader in China from the 1920s to present-day, while the other follows the exploits of Sun Wukong within the iconic "Journey to the West". These storylines converge, illustrating the unwavering dedication of both the troupe leader and Sun Wukong in safeguarding their troupe and home. Hand puppetry holds a venerable and esteemed position in Singapore's cultural heritage, with a legacy deeply rooted in its societal fabric. In 2011, "The Finger Players" introduced the historical backdrop of hand puppetry to the public through "Turn By Turn We Turn", championing puppetry culture and attaining significant acclaim. By employing the principles of localized translation and Eugene A. Nida's theory of functional equivalence, this study conducts an in-depth analysis of the translation process for the script and digital resources of the play. It identifies translation challenges and discrepancies, explores how translation can serve as a conduit for linguistic and cultural exchange in cross-cultural communication, and discusses its impact on the cultural inheritance of puppet shows in Singapore, as well as the roles and hurdles faced in the preservation and promotion of traditional arts.
