The politics of recognition in cultural awarding institutions: a case study of Taiwan's Golden Melody Awards (2015–2023)

Since its inception in 1990, the Golden Melody Awar...

Since its inception in 1990, the Golden Melody Awards (GMA) has been key in rewarding the work of Taiwan’s popular music industry, functioning as part of a complex cultural awarding ecosystem. It gives recognition to works in line with contemporary cultural dynamics, echoing the republic’s approach to cultural politics, which has taken a democratic shift in the recent decade. This ongoing era of heightened socio-political consciousness in Taiwan has spurred a politics of equal recognition, of languages, genders/sexualities, and nationalities among others, and influenced the GMA’s mechanisms, recalling post martial-law notions of Taiwanisation and De-Sinification. This paper analyses the 2015–2023 editions of the GMA using Charles Taylor’s theory on The Politics of Recognition and posits the GMA’s current role as a cultural recognition apparatus in the establishment of a de-Sinified, Taiwanese cultural construct within the cultural networks of Asia and beyond.
