Subtitling for the d/Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (SDH) has been around in Western countries for some time and is slowly becoming more widespread in Eastern countries. However, there is still a lack of concrete guidelines in SDH for Eastern countries. This paper will begin by assessing the current guidelines available across the globe, examining the effectiveness and limitations of existing guidelines. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Surveys and user testing with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) individuals will provide valuable insights into their needs and preferences. A questionnaire was designed for data collection, where participants were shown two sets of interlingual subtitles for the documentaries The Ivory Game and Chasing Coral. Participants were invited to share their preferences on various areas of SDH. The findings from this study will have the potential to inform industry guidelines for enhancing accessibility and inclusivity in Singapore’s media sector.
