Summary:A large excavation of approximately 140m wide and 200m long was required at the proposed Tan Tock Seng Hospital site in Singapore for the construction of a 15m deep basement. The excavation is close to 2 nos. of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) tunnels of 6m diameter. The reduced levels (RL) of the tunnels do not vary substantially. However because of the undulating ground surface, the depth of these tunnels varies from 15m to 27m. The side of excavation is approximately 20m from the edge of the nearest MRT structure. In view of the substantial depth and size of excavation, significant effects on the surrounding ground and MRT tunnels were expected.
