Summary: | In the PCB assembly industry, despite the existence of numerous insertion and placement machines for the assembly of standard components, there remains around ten to twenty percent of non-standard components (or odd-forms) which are usually assembled manually. These assemblies are labour-intensive and a major cause of bottle-necks. Existing odd-form assembly machines in the local market are mainly pick-and-place robots which are inflexible and suited for low mix, high volume production. With the trend towards flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) to achieve better competitiveness and productivity, a more flexible solution will be required. |
