The focus of this dissertation is on the study of the Chinese language teaching in Singapore’s kindergartens and childcare centres since 2000. This is a field less researched, and its importance is gaining greater attention. Singapore’s main resource is its people, hence to remain competitive, the quality of its people is significant. Preschool education, being the basis and foundation of lifelong learning, is important for a child’s development and growth. In the globalised and knowledge-based economy today, the necessity of learning cannot be stressed enough. The growing China economy gave unprecedented status to Mandarin and Chinese culture. Mandarin thus became a highly popular language with the economical value associated. Through the study of the pilot research project, reports and policies, the Ministry of Education has conducted and implemented changes in preschool Chinese language teaching methods and outcomes are outlined. Insights into the Chinese language teaching and learning environment are provided through interviews conducted with kindergartens and childcare centres personnel. |
