Summary: | This study aims to research on the factors in Quality Management principles, Quality Awards and Service Quality which can be applied in the seaport sector. The factors included in the conceptual model will be tested empirically to propose a quality seaport model.
The study employs the triangulation method using literature data, interviews and surveys. Six interviews were conducted with the port regulator, port organisation and port users together with a sample of 350 shipping companies, shippers and freight forwarders being surveyed out of which 37 surveys were returned.
The findings show that a Quality Seaport comprises of 14 main attributes which have been validated by the survey. Another 2 main attributes have not been validated and has to be further researched on. It also shows the respondent‟s ranking of the attributes in importance and an analysis was done to find out whether the difference in responses were due to their work experience, industrial sector or the port terminals that they use.
The limitations of this study are such that it is only conducted within Singapore and the sample size of the empirical study can be expanded to enhance the reliability of the results. Also, the types of literature review being used can be different. Nevertheless, the findings still serve as a benchmark to measure quality in seaports. |
