Comparing destination images : Resorts World Sentosa and Resorts World Genting.

This research deals with the subject of destination image within the context of Integrated Resorts. It focuses on the case of Resorts World Sentosa and Resorts World Genting – two Integrated Resorts that have similar offerings. Due to their close proximity, they exhibit a degree of direct rivalry but interestingly, both are owned by the same parent company – Genting Group. In this study, qualitative comparisons of the resorts' characteristics and images were carried out. Thereafter, primary (field surveys and observations) and secondary data were collected and analysed to uncover the factors that influenced the formation of images. From the survey findings, respondents felt that Resorts World Sentosa was more luxurious and business-oriented, while Resorts World Genting was more value-for-money. Deeper analyses reflected that these image differences were influenced mainly by word-of-mouth. For Resorts World Genting, weather was found to be a significant factor influencing respondent‟s motivation to visit the resort while the novelty factor was what attracted visitors to Resorts World Sentosa. Managerial and academic implications were discussed at the end of the report.
