Searching for biasness through the analysis of English and Mandarin lexicon used in “Covering Islam”
而分析对象则是篇章中的 “knowledge(知识)” 以及“intellect(智力)”这两个词汇。

而分析对象则是篇章中的 “knowledge(知识)” 以及“intellect(智力)”这两个词汇。 The main purpose of this thesis is to discuss specifically on the third chapter of “Covering Islam”, written by Edward W. Said to see whether the use of certain words from the original version and translated version have certain biasness in it. As for the words used for analysis are “knowledge” and “intellect”. As Said sees knowledge as power, and the fact that Western media perceives Islam negatively and is able to influence the world making people think likewise, that became the “orthodox knowledge”, hence the need to analyze “knowledge” itself. Therefore, as mentioned above, from Western media’s point of view, Islam is seen as “antithetical knowledge”. However to Said, Islam is not an “antithetical knowledge”. In fact, it is also one of the “orthodox knowledge”, for through “intellect” we will realize that Islam is scientific and objective, which is why to Said, Islam is also an “orthodox knowledge”. As for how we define “knowledge”, depends very much on one’s “intellect” and from Said’s point of view, an individual’s “intellect” derives from one’s own education level and experience. Hence, we can see from Said’s words that there is an underlying concept of hierarchical status, which is also a hidden biasness. All in all, these two words used by Said have values of its own, for from it we can see biasness within the concept Said is trying to convey. |
