Since the early years of Singapore's independence, many scholars have always been casting a bleak view on Singapore's national identity, as they also analyse how Singapore seeks to undergo the challenging task of constructing national identity. As there are few research on how Singapore National Day Parades constructs national identity, this field of interest becomes the main text of analysis in this thesis, as it is involves a large extent of constructing national identity within a day's time. This thesis seeks to analyse National Day Parade 2011 mainly from the perspective of National Identity, interpreting the various national symbols on how it represents the image of Singapore henceforth the construction of national identity, as well as some of its negative complications and metaphors. Considering the unique context of Singapore from history, politics, ethnicity and society, this thesis uncovers four main ways of construction, namely the co-relationship between ethnicity and modernity; crisis awareness and repression of ideology; rhetorical mechanisms involved to unify Singaporeans in National Day Rally Speech; and lastly, the surplus of symbols and weak national identity.
