Description
Translation and social phenomenon are closely related to each other. Translated word may affect the ideology of society, the background and social context in which the translator is in may also control the formation and dissemination of a translated word. Apparently, these two factors are mutually restrained. This paper aims to examine the social context in the 1970s that affected the creation of “Le Ling”, a representative example of “Singapore Chinese”, and various social and cultural factors taken into consideration by the translator when creating a new translated word for “elderly”. Using Skopos theory, this paper also explores the effect that government ageing policies have on the purpose of translation. “Le Ling” was created to reform the pessimistic thoughts that society have on ageing, and was published through communication means to fulfill the social function of translation. The new translated word incorporated into linguistic and led to a change in society ideology. “Le Ling” amended the general attitude of Singapore society towards the elderly, and ultimately restored the self-identity of the elderly by recognizing their contribution.
