论“二战”时期《西游记》翻译的译者主体性 : 以阿瑟•韦利与Monkey为例 = On translator’s subjectivity of XiYouJi during World War II : using Arthur Waley and Monkey as an example

Arthur Waley is an important twentieth-century Sinologist, famous for his translations of various Oriental literatures into England. Throughout his life, Waley translated and popularised many different genres of China Literatures into England, influencing vast amount of readers to be interested in China’s literatures and culture.
However, current studies on Waley and his translations were still very limited. Studies on Waley’s translations were mainly focused on his translations of Chinese poetry, while studies on Monkey, the only Chinese novel Waley attempted to translate into English, were still lacking.
The lack of scholarly attention resulted in limited progress in the studies of Monkey. As such, to expand knowledge in this area, this paper aimed to study about the translator’s subjectivity in Monkey from a Polysystem perspective, employing views from Nord and Lefevere regarding the various factors that would affect a translation process. From there, this paper would like to investigate the translation process of Monkey in the Second World War, and from there, attempt to prove that the various changes Waley made in his translation process were influenced by a set of time factors in that period. |
